THE PLATE AND THE PALETTE The development of grain sculptures and their positioning on the painted table cloth depicts the role of food as sixth essential element for survival of mankind and also its role in weaving beautiful human relations, which are finely woven together. Like in case of silk fabric, despite being separate warp and weft the silk yarns when woven together, make the world’s most beautiful fabric-SILK. The project is a step forward towards the eternal satisfaction after which I am running. Like searching for water, it is like mirage in the desert, as I get closer I realize that I have to still walk more. The project “THE PLATE AND THE PALETTE” gave me an opportunity to explore myself. While crafting different forms in grains, a feeling of crafting my own body parts came up. The premonition of adding, subtracting and multiplying the infinity engulfed me not to realise that infinity can neither be measured nor can you give it a shape; perhaps the forms in grains are like my childhood sand castles, the answers to my imagination, but truly an illusion. The root cause of developing the forms in wheat, rice, maize and seeds from different trees is the “food” we eat. The food that helps you grow from an egg and sperm to a fully grown individual, without which the mere existence would not be possible. In the universe made of five elements: Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space, to me “FOOD” is the sixth element that supports the human body to sustain. The development of different forms in the food grains and seeds are the constitution of wheat, rice, maize, the forms with which I relate. In my childhood, I would be running through the wheat, paddy fields and plucking their newly germinated seeds, and putting them in a small closed container with a belief that they will grow some day. The feeling is still fresh. Brought up in a village , I moved to Chandigarh in my youth, the beautifully conceived and geometrically designed city by a famous architect Le Corbusier. The city is dominated by geometrical architecture in square, rectangle, triangle and many more forms. My close association with them is the core of depiction of “The Plate and the palette” project. The choice of the colour palette for the project came to me naturally as I have been painting “Urban Phulkari” inspired by the traditional embroidered craft of state of Punjab in India. The choice of the fabric as silk was made easy due to the natural lustre of the silk fabric that resembled the present day glittery world. Painting the table cloth to me was like painting the inner boundaries of my body for over five decades , from one end to the other . The journey was like remembering the beautiful moments, various instances, halting at different stations that can never be forgotten. The length of the table cloth is related to the addition of years in life after birth. As if I was painting the calendar of life in colours and lines, which had the finer details of all the important dates, events that had good and bad memories, the festivals, the full moons and the dark nights. The final cloth put on the table placed in the centre of the room depicts the layers of time relative to high tides of the sea. The tides which are born from the sea and they finally rest in sea; so is the table cloth, confined to the four walls of the room, on the table in the centre.
